- Best overall: Sliquid H2O, glycerin-free and compatible with toys and condoms.
- Best for toys: ID Glide, stated safe with silicone and rubber toys.
- Best thick gel: Astroglide Gel, a no-drip, stay-put formula.
- Osmolality matters: WHO's ideal is 380 mOsm/kg or less, yet many popular gels measured far above it in older lab tests.
Water-based lube is the default choice for good reason. It rinses off with water, washes off easily, does not stain, and works with latex condoms and silicone toys. It is also the biggest category, at an estimated 54.9% of the market.
The differences are in the details: glycerin or no glycerin, thick gel or light liquid, plain or aloe-based. We picked nine distinct formulas that cover those needs, and it is a sensible starting point if you are new to lube. For other bases, see silicone lubes or hybrids.

How we chose
Water-based picks had to state their base clearly, say something specific about condoms and toys, and offer a distinct formula. We favored glycerin-free and paraben-free lists where the maker confirms them.
- Compatibility: latex, polyisoprene and polyurethane condoms, and silicone toys, only where stated.
- Texture: thick gels, light liquids and absorbing formulas are all represented.
- Ingredients: glycerin-free and aloe or cellulose-based options included.
- No repeats: one formula per brand slot, even when the brand sells many sizes.

What osmolality means for your pick
Osmolality measures how concentrated a lubricant is. The World Health Organization's 2012 advisory note says it should ideally not exceed 380 mOsm/kg, with an interim upper limit of 1,200. For comparison, vaginal secretions measure roughly 260-290 mOsm/kg.
In a 2012 lab study of over-the-counter gels, 6 of 10 water-based products were hyperosmolar, and two near-isotonic gels (Good Clean Love and PRÉ) tested safest. Those are older formulations and the same brand can measure differently between labs, so treat the numbers as context, not a rating of today's bottle.

Our picks do not rely on these numbers, since your own formula, label and body matter more. If you are sensitive, see our sensitive-skin list.
Choosing the best water-based lube for you
- Glycerin concern? Pick Sliquid H2O or Playground Free Love. Evidence linking glycerin to yeast infections is weak, so this is precaution, not a proven risk.
- Silicone toys? Any water-based lube here is fine; ID Glide states it explicitly.
- Longer sessions? Try Skyn Naturally Endless, or move up to silicone.
- Clean-up? All of these rinse with water.

Questions
Is water-based lube safe with condoms?
Yes, water-based lubes are generally compatible with latex condoms. Check each label for polyurethane or polyisoprene notes.
Can water-based lube dry out?
Water-based formulas can absorb or evaporate during long sessions. Add a little more, or add a few drops of water to refresh it.
Does water-based lube stain sheets?
Most are non-staining and wash out with water. Check the label for your pick.
What does glycerin-free mean?
The formula does not use glycerin, a sweet humectant. Some people choose glycerin-free as a precaution, although direct clinical evidence of harm is limited.
Can I use it for anal sex?
Some formulas are labeled for it, and thicker gels often suit it. Check the specific label and consider a thicker or silicone option.
What is the best water-based lube?
It depends on your needs: choose a glycerin-free formula for sensitivity, or an aloe-based one if you prefer plant-based. The table above compares our picks.
